Accessibility statement for the app
Last updated: September 2026
khema (Gabriel Zerbe) is committed to making the Khema app accessible in accordance with the German Disability Equality Act (BGG) and the Barrier-Free Information Technology Ordinance (BITV 2.0), which implement Directive (EU) 2016/2102.
This statement applies to the Khema app for iOS (iPhone and iPad) and Android. Our website has its own statement at khema.ai/en/accessibility.
Compliance status
The requirements follow from sections 3 and 4 of BITV 2.0. The applicable technical standard is EN 301 549, which requires the WCAG 2.1 success criteria at level AA for apps. We build the app to the stricter WCAG 2.2 level AA.
The app is partially compliant with these requirements because of the non-compliances and exceptions listed below.
Non-accessible content
The following content is not yet accessible, or not fully.
- Screen orientation (WCAG 1.3.4). On phones the app stays in portrait, because its layout is designed for it. Settings → Accessibility → “Allow rotation” lets it turn with the device. The screens before sign-in (welcome, sign-in, consent, introduction questions) stay in portrait on phones. On tablets the app always turns with the device.
- Contrast in the standard presentation (WCAG 1.4.3, 1.4.11). In the standard presentation some text, icons and edges have too little contrast, for example the white plus on the yellow button. Alternative: the contrast levels “Increased” and “High” meet every contrast requirement. “Increased” turns on automatically when you enable “Increase Contrast” (iOS) or “High contrast text” (Android) on your device. In the app, choose the level under Settings → Accessibility → Contrast.
- Reading order in the chat and the emergency kit (WCAG 1.3.2, 2.4.3). Screen readers read the header with the back button and the title after the content.
- Two games in the emergency kit (WCAG 2.1.1, 2.5.1, exception). “Smoke Ninja” and “Cloud Hopper” are played by swiping across the playing field or by tilting the device. They cannot be played with a screen reader. This is the permitted exception for input that depends on the path of the movement. Alternative: the other two games and all exercises in the emergency kit work with a screen reader, and the app lists them first.
- Time limit in the chat (WCAG 2.2.1). A conversation ends after about 90 minutes without a new message. While the chat is open, the app warns about a quarter of an hour beforehand; the app does not know the exact moment, so the warning is an estimate. So far the time can only be extended by sending a message; extending it without a message is not yet possible. After the end the conversation stays readable, an unsent text is kept, and you can start a new conversation right away that carries on from it.
- Sign-in and account management in the browser. Sign-in, registration, password changes and account deletion run on a separate web page (auth.khema.ai) in the browser. We have not yet fully checked and adapted these pages.
- Legal texts (WCAG 1.3.1, 2.4.4). The app loads the terms of use and the privacy policy from our website. There, tables are not yet marked up as tables, and some links are named only by their web address.
- Introduction questionnaire (WCAG 3.3.4). The questionnaire checks every answer at each step, and you can go back page by page before the last step. There is no summary of all answers before submitting. Afterwards, answers can be changed where the questionnaire allows it.
Preparation of this statement
This statement was prepared on 28 September 2026. It is based on a self-assessment: a review of the entire source code against WCAG 2.2 level AA and automated tests, among them the contrast of every colour pair, operation at 200 % text size, and the names and roles of all controls. Testing with assistive technology on devices is still pending. No third-party assessment has taken place. The statement was last reviewed on 28 September 2026.

Conciliation procedure
If our answer does not satisfy you, you can contact the conciliation body under section 16 of the German Disability Equality Act (section 34 BFSG). What the app does for accessibility
The app supports VoiceOver and TalkBack, text sizes up to 200 %, switch control, external keyboards and voice control. It follows the device settings for contrast, motion, transparency and bold text (“Bold Text” on iOS, “Bold text” on Android 12 and later, each from the next start of the app). Under Settings → Accessibility you can set the contrast (Standard, Increased, High), reduced motion, vibration and screen rotation.
We do not currently offer content in Easy Language or in German Sign Language.
We are working on these points next: the reading order in the chat, extending a conversation without a new message, the sign-in pages and the legal texts.
